Dear CAF… After 3 days of not being able to access the forum with my last ID and password, and the Forum Administrators attempting to help me figure out what happened… (thank you, Administrators… for your help. I appreciate it :thankyou: ); I finally had to re-register with a new name.

I’m just curious… has this happened to any of you? And what do you think might be the problem? I have my suspicions… that it’s my prehistoric browsers fault.

Feedback from computer genius’ will be greatly appreciated. Thanks… and God bless.

I was stuck in that “edit password” error loop here too…
I’m pretty sure it’s an error here at CAF…

Thanks Emily. I still wonder, though… if the problem could at least be partly my “antique” browser. There are many sites I can’t even access… because they all have those mini-movies playing. My system simply won’t allow me “in”.

Another weird thing. The CAF site won’t allow me to add a “profile” picture to the new ID. 😦

Anyone else? 🤷

Your browser probably isn’t causing those problems. There’s a chance it could be a cache issue – the browser stores webpages on your hard drive for quicker access, and sometimes that gets out of whack with the real versions – but I don’t think that’s too likely in this case, especially with other people going through the same thing.

As for the rest, what browser are you using? If it’s an old version of Internet Explorer (pre-6.0) or Netscape Navigator, you really need to upgrade. Firefox is free and pretty user-friendly.

I had the ‘edit password’ loop yesterday. I logged out of CAF, cleared cache then logged back in and changed my email address (to the same one) and clicked the link emailed to me and then poof I was out of the loop. I believe this happens if for some reason CAF tried to email you about a forum thread to which you are subscribed and the bot gets any error back.

“Mirdath” Thanks for this. I have Internet Explorer… 5.2 for Mac. System is a very old, Mac flatscreen OSX. I’ve tried to update it a few times. But it’s so old, that even the oldest versions of IE… won’t seem to load on this system.

I’d have no clue… how to check for a cache issue. Any suggestions? Thanks for the replies, all. God bless.

Pretty much do what cthulhubryan suggested. First log out of CAF. Then go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options (I think – it’s been a long, long time since I used IE 5 😉 ). There should be a tab labeled ‘Temporary Internet Files’. Go there and clear them all out – there’ll be buttons to delete them. The files aren’t important, so go ahead and blow them all away. Then try coming back to CAF and logging in with your old username.

“Mirdath” Thanks again, for your help. I tried to follow the instructions you left. But the wording on my Mac menu… wasn’t exact. So… here’s a question…

Are “cookies” the same thing as “temporary internet files”? (I didn’t wanna blast them away… before I found out  ).

You must think I’m really dumb :whacky: lol. Well… no comment from me, on that. 😉 But I don’t have much time for learning how this contraption (the “confuser”) works.

Thanks, and God bless.

MV :thankyou:

Cookies are one kind of temporary internet file. They’re tiny little blobs of text that store information about where you go and what you do. Like how you can close CAF and come back to it the next day without having to log in again – that’s because the cookie stored on your computer says ‘hey, I’m back!’

But they’re not the ones that could be causing this. The cache is comprised of actual copies of the content you’re viewing. If you dug through your cache you’d probably find a copy of every emoticon you’ve used in this thread, for example. The browser might call them Temporary Internet Files, Cache, or something else (but kinda similar). Those are the ones you want to clear out.

And you’re not dumb, you just aren’t particularly familiar with computers 😉 They really are incredibly complex, even though most of those who’ve grown up with them and/or work with them for a living frequently take this kind of knowledge for granted 😃
