My brother passed away thanksgiving week in the hospital. he had gastrointestinal problems, and was having surgery to remove a colastamy bag. To make a long story short, he didn’t make it due to complications. This was all caused by a drug in which there are now many lawsuits for this same problem. My brother had started a suit, and now he’s gone, I thopught of taking it up for him.
i keep going back to the scripture about how it is a narrow path for a rich man to live in the kingdom of God. What if i get awarded lots of money due to his death? Should I just let it go, and mourn like normal. Im not a rich man at all, living check to check. I dont believe the money would change me,… and a judgement would help my family deal a little easier with his young passing. he was 33. Any thoughts? Is what the Bible states on a rich man literal?

Yes BUT,

Not absolutely Applicable to everyone who is wealthy. Rather it is a severe warning of the high risk of “having and serving other gods” such as greed, power, or averice.

The more one has in excess makes it easy for such a person to forget about God; the source of all that we posess.

It is ONLY a GRAVE warring to take care. Charity is expected from all; but an even greater giving is imposed on those much Blessed.

So sorry to hear about your brother. may he REST IN PEACE… AMEN!

God Bless,
Pat

Very sorry to hear about your brother passing away. My condolences to you and your family.

If you should be awarded a substantial amount of money, there is nothing wrong with that. What the image of the camel passing through the eye of the needle pertains to, is that the rich were not willing to empty the wide load the camels were carrying in order to squeeze through the narrow gate (needle).

The greedy rich do not want to let go of their wealth and serve money and their greed rather than serve God.

As the previous poster mentioned, it would be good to remember to be charitable with any amount you receive. Try to do good with this money and help others. (Charity starts at home - so don’t give it all away if you need some to help family members 😃 ).

May God comfort you and guide you,
blessings,
CEM

The reason rich men have a problem getting to heaven is simply because they have difficulty turning to God. We must willingly turn to Him, but the “deceitfulness of wealth” as scripture calls it, causes us to deceive ourselves into thinking we’re self-sufficient, which breeds arrogance/pride, the enemy of faith. And we know that God exalts humility and opposes pride, since pride opposes and seeks to exclude Him. So it’s not the riches, itself, that cause the problem, it’s the will which refuses to turn to God as a result of it’s perceived self-sufficiency. Remember the next verse where the disciples asked, “Who, then, can be saved?” Jesus answers, “With man this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.” None of us are saved except by His grace.

these are thought ive had, and are just confirmed, just wanted to get someone elses take. Thank you for everyones (name removed by moderator)ut… and thank you for the kind words about my brother, and my family. God bless you all!!

“Eye of the needle” was the gate in the town shaped like the eye of a needle. To pass through the gate, you had to unburden and unload your animals. This was a safety measure for cities so that weapons and other items hidden couldn’t be snuck in.

So Jesus’ saying about a rich man and a camel passing through referred to a rich man being able to let go of his wealth for the Gospel.

As to the possible settlement, I would caution you to find good counsel if you receive any money. If you have never had money, it is VERY difficult to control your money and not have it corrupt or control you. I would find several wealthy people to sit down and talk with to learn from so it won’t be a curse and instead a blessing.

First, it would be nice if you can donate some of that money in memory of your brother to help a worthwhile cost, like feeding the hungry of poor nations or building schools for their poor children.

But the point of Jesus was not possession but attachment. Its not evil to have money or even lots of it. But one should not be attached to the money. Some people make a lot of money because they’re good at what they do, that is not a sin. But some people even with no money always hopes to make more, oftentimes obssesses over it. That is those who will not pass through the Eye of the Needle. As the previous poster pointed out, the Eye of the Needle is a nickname for Jerusalem’s narrowest gate where camels carrying baggage would need to unload their baggage and then pass through. So we must do the same to be able to get to heaven, not have anything else attached to us.

if the lawsuit will result in a dangerous drug being taken off the market it is a good thing, especially if there seems to be no other way to accomplish that goal (which is not a given). My personal opinion is that initiating a lawsuit merely because there is a likelihood of a cash award is not legitimate. There has to be some other overriding reason, such as stopping the defendent from engaging in a dangerous activity. You could always donate any award to some charity your relative would support, or to the charity that deals with his disease.

Is this a class action lawsuit?

Don’t set your heart on the money–only participate for the sake of justice.

Once the lawyers take their big bite, and it’s divided among the plaintiffs, it could be a paltry amount.

That’s the way it worked for my dad–his case went all the way to SCOTUS and they won but got next to nothing–the lawyers sure got paid though.

Decide right now what percentage you will donate to church and charity, regardless what the amount is that you receive.

Do you have standing? His estate can still participate in the lawsuit. Are you executor, and/or heir? If neither, you may not have standing to make the decision.

I’m not a lawyer and I don’t even play one on TV. 👍

Does anyone have a picture or link to the picture of the needle gate? Is this a named gate in the Jerusalem of Jesus’ time?
