It’s only people under 25 who even use that word in conversation- at what point in history is this supposed to have taken place?
It seemed odd to me too, but the origin of the word gossip is the old english phrase godsibb which meant sponsor or Godparent.

In middle English the word godsibb referred to a friend.

So the term God sibling never existed in a religious context.

(I’m a bit of a nerd so these things interest me 🤓)

I’ve heard the terms Godsister and Godbrother. They were used to reference two children who shared a Godparent.

Fascinating- thanks! 🙂

I believe that officially, you can only have 2 godparents at the most. But what a gift for these babies that there are more than two people who WANT to be intimately involved in their lives and Christian Catholic upbringing. Living in an area where there are few Catholics and no Catholics in my family, I was unable to choose people who actually stayed and participated in my children’s lives.
