It seemed odd to me too, but the origin of the word gossip is the old english phrase godsibb which meant sponsor or Godparent. It’s only people under 25 who even use that word in conversation- at what point in history is this supposed to have taken place?
In middle English the word godsibb referred to a friend.
So the term God sibling never existed in a religious context.

I’ve heard the terms Godsister and Godbrother. They were used to reference two children who shared a Godparent.
