I have an unhappy and often abusive marriage and am confused about where I stand with the Church if I am thinking about divorce? I understand that the Bible says that divorce is only an option when one is unfaithful but why doesn’t it mention abuse? If I get a divorce, can I remarry? Does God really want us to be lonely for the rest of our lives? I have two children, what is the Church’s opinion on breaking up my family? My husband is not a Christian and has no interest in becoming one. He is very negative about religion and consequently I have been distant from the Church for some years. We meet when he was still married to his first wife (seperated four or five years). He got a divorce and the Church wouldn’t marry us (which broke my heart). We got married in another church. I always assumed that the Church still recognised my marriage, is this so? My husband was granted an annulment four years later, though neither he or his first wife are Catholics. What does that mean for us?

Suey,

These links should give you same basic information to use when approaching your priest to discuss this, which I encourage you to do. If you have any further questions or concerns that are not answered by these links, please contact Catholic Answers directly.
