Can a First Communion and a birthday be celebrated together?

My son will be receiving his First Communion in May and it is the same weekend as my daughter’s sixth birthday. We only planned to have a family gathering with a couple of close friends. It would be the same guests invited to both events. Would it be inappropriate to celebrate both the same day? I thought it would be inconsiderate of me to ask everybody to spend both weekend days at my house. Thanks for your help!

Presumably, you are referring to the family celebrations and not to the liturgical service. In that case, it is up to you how you arrange parties for your children. I will only say that I think it would upset your children to have both parties melded together rather than give each child the pleasure of a special day. If your guests cannot stay all weekend, then I recommend celebrating First Communion with them (it is the more important occasion) and celebrating your daughter’s birthday with just your immediate family.
