My friend Jacob and I have been best friends for 10 years. It started off when I was dating his friends. His friend and I broke up after being together for 2 years, but we kept up our friendship.
I must admit that there was a time Jacob did develop feelings more than friendship for me, but I have never felt that way towards him. It was a struggle, but after about a year we were able to maintain our best-friend status. We’re more like brother and sister.
A few years ago he met a girl. From the start she was jealous, which is to be expected I suppose. I tried to get to know her and become her friend as well. She was new to the country, so I would pick her up in my car and drive her to meet him if he asked me to and I had time. (He doesn’t have a car himself).
She persisted that Jacob and I stop talking to each other on the phone. She only wants us to see each other a few times a year on special occasion gatherings. Basically my best friend has turned into an acquaintance. Jacob has tried talking to her because he says our friendship is important to him. I’m really the only person he talks to and confides in, and she has taken that away from him.
Is she right in claiming him and taking away our friendship? Am I wrong in thinking that men and women can be friends forever? We are already in our 30s now, and it just seems so highschool-ish.
