I am female and married with no children. My husband and I are unable to have children. Is it possible for me to become a consecrated religious (i.e., is there such a thing as a married nun)? If not, do you have any suggestions for a married woman sensing the call to religious life?

Thanks for your answer.

Hear houston,

The three public vows of poverty, chastity and celibate chastity lived within the context of legitimately recognized religious institute (order) comprise the essence of religious life.

However, the laity may profess a private vow or vows. One may also join a third order which is an extension of a religious order or monastery in which one shares in its spirituality and prayer-life while remaining in the world. Such people are known as oblates when attached to a Benedictine monastery.

Orders that have such lay extensions include the Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites, Augustinians and Legionaries of Christ.

Married persons ought not overlook the spirituality inherent within the sacrament of Matrimony. I would suggest that you read the book, “Good News About Sex and Marriage.” It is based on Pope John Paul II’s theology of marriage. You can order it through shopcatholic.com of by phone: 888 291 8000.
