HI Franna,
Having experienced similar instances over many years, I began to reflect on the essence of purgatory in time and space, and I have no doubt that you are right, because the idea that purgatory is a ‘physical place’, as we understand it in our experience of the human condition, is probably the real issue.
My own sense of purgatory is of a ‘state’ of existence, outside of the ‘heavenly throng’ - ‘beyond the light’ (As shown by Jesus in the Transfiguration, and Resurrection) - where souls in a state of impure love ‘cannot enter the light, and cannot join the heavenly throng’. This may be due, not so much to a ‘Godly punishment/intervention’ in earthly terms of our human condition, but more to the individual lack of pure love, which is the source of all power, and thus each individual soul may prevent itself from reaching the light. Thus prayer for every soul in this intermediate state of existence may enhance the love and purity necessary to eventually permit that soul to join the heavenly throng.
Imagine that you have been invited to the greatest party of all, where all of your best friends will be waiting for you, but after several breakdowns along the way, you arrive in a dishevelled and filthy state. So you are sent around the back - to the stable block - to get cleaned up before you can make your entrance and be ‘announced’ - how would you feel during this process - ??
We’ll all find out soon enough !
God bless
