Awhile back, after the suicide of my brother,We experienced strange paranormal occurences in my apartment.Little objects would fall over, including a mass card, and a relative of mind noticed a gray mist around one of my brothers’paintings(he was an artist)A local Catholic Priest who I spoke to stated that my brother was in purgatory.Do the souls of those in purgatory visit the living?Just curious and would like to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience.Thankfully, after many prayers and numerous masses said, there are no longer any such happenings.

Fr. Arminjon, in St Therese’s favorite book “The End of the Present World” describes multiple instances in which those who were suffering in purgatory were permitted to make themselves visibly manifest in space and time (ghosts) and subsequently were prayed for and had mass offered for repeatedly and eventually they stopped being seen. Also, I believe St Faustina describes a similar incident in her diary. It was also the theological basis for Hamlet’s father’s appearances, if I understand correctly. Also, I could swear I remember our FSSP priests preaching about it or mentioning it from the pulpit. So yes, this is a reality as far as I know. If anyone experiences this and knows who the person is, have a priest say mass for them… a lot, for month even, just as the OP says they did. I’d recommend having a traditionalist priest (FSSP, ICK, even SSPX) do it since I’d be worried about some of the Novus Ordo priests I know not taking it as seriously. Even if it means arranging it via mail, I’d have a Trad priest do it. But thats just for my own practical reasons, obviously there are plenty of good NO priests out there. (And don’t forget to leave a couple of bucks as a favor for the priest whenever possible).

Is "The End Of The Present World"still available in print? Can it be ordered online?

I have not had any such experience but I believe that if God wishes for a soul in Purgatory to return to earth for a specific purpose, it would so happen. I cannot, however comment on what happened at your home.

HI Franna,

Having experienced similar instances over many years, I began to reflect on the essence of purgatory in time and space, and I have no doubt that you are right, because the idea that purgatory is a ‘physical place’, as we understand it in our experience of the human condition, is probably the real issue.

My own sense of purgatory is of a ‘state’ of existence, outside of the ‘heavenly throng’ - ‘beyond the light’ (As shown by Jesus in the Transfiguration, and Resurrection) - where souls in a state of impure love ‘cannot enter the light, and cannot join the heavenly throng’. This may be due, not so much to a ‘Godly punishment/intervention’ in earthly terms of our human condition, but more to the individual lack of pure love, which is the source of all power, and thus each individual soul may prevent itself from reaching the light. Thus prayer for every soul in this intermediate state of existence may enhance the love and purity necessary to eventually permit that soul to join the heavenly throng.

Imagine that you have been invited to the greatest party of all, where all of your best friends will be waiting for you, but after several breakdowns along the way, you arrive in a dishevelled and filthy state. So you are sent around the back - to the stable block - to get cleaned up before you can make your entrance and be ‘announced’ - how would you feel during this process - ??

We’ll all find out soon enough !

God bless
