If a Catholic woman divorced her first Catholic husband after several years and four children, then remarried in a civil ceremony and then her first Catholic husband died, is she then considered a widow who can then go to General Confession, do penance, be absolved of the many years of continuing adultery (due to the second marriage) and finally properly marry the second husband and be re-admitted to the Eucharist? Am I just being legalistic and searching for a way for this woman to return to the church after 34 years of a second marriage? Or is this possible? I’m a convert and I really don’t know the answer.Thank you.
