I read that a priest was awarded in excess of $1 million as a result of his lawsuit against fraudulent medical practices. What could he do with the money since he is bound by vows of poverty?
Only priests who are members of religious orders take a vow of poverty. Diocesan priests do not. If the priest in question is a consecrated religious, the money would go to his religious order. If he is a diocesan priest, he would be allowed to keep the money, which would be his to use at his own discretion.
