Can anyone give a link to the "history of the Altar Card

I had a discussion with a priest the other day and he told me that the Altar cards used in the EF Mass were not used until the 1700’s. Can anyone find a link to verify if that is true?

It would be interesting to learn the history of the Altar cards.

I am curious as to the why for altar cards. I remember going to EF massea when that’s all thier were, and the preist kept his thumb and foringer joined until the ablutions. He could not turn pages.

Is that why altar cards were invented, or am I as usual way off base?
