I had a discussion with a fundamentalist who said the Church was blasphemous when it depicts Jesus with long hair, since St. Paul instructed the Corinthian men not to wear long hair. I had no response. Can anyone help???
 
As usual we are supposed to read Scripture in light of the time it was written. Jewish men wore their hair longer then. Only by more recent standards (last century or so) does Jesus’ hair seem long. Even not so recent history we have many portraits of men with longer hair, but to them it wasn’t long. Woman’s hair used to be kept a lot longer too. Waist length was very common. Now in woman’s magazines, hair barely touching the shoulder is classified as long. Chin length is classified as medium and cropped as short. Hope this helps. God Bless you and your friend!
 
Perhaps you should remind your friend of Samson who said to Delilah, “A razor has never come upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I be shaved, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.”
(Judges 16:17)

Concerning Nazirites, the Bible says, "And the LORD said to Moses, "Say to the people of Israel, When either a man or a woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to the LORD, he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink; he shall drink no vinegar made from wine or strong drink, and shall not drink any juice of grapes or eat grapes, fresh or dried. All the days of his separation he shall eat nothing that is produced by the grapevine, not even the seeds or the skins. “All the days of his vow of separation no razor shall come upon his head; until the time is completed for which he separates himself to the LORD, he shall be holy; he shall let the locks of hair of his head grow long.” (Numbers 6:1-5)

Since Jesus was singularly separated to the Lord, it seems consistant with Sacred Scripture that he would have let the locks of hair of his head grow long.

Let me just give you a little word of warning about fundamentalist. I used to be one. And there is no winning with them as far as getting them to agree with you. They are anti-catholic to the core, and even when you prove to them with all the proof in the world they still will keep the blinders on.

I was never a “good” fundamentalist because I was one who was an actual truth seeker, and willing to admit when i was wrong and disregard what was wrong even when I had defended it in the past. I caught all kinds of **** when I went to a fundamentalist Bible Institute because I was not the typical Bible thumping KJV-only kind of guy.

I know the fundamentalists like every square inch of my naked body(as Rush Limbaugh would say about liberals).http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif Don’t waste your time trying to get them to see the light. Shake the dust off your feet.
