I recently visited a Catholic Church in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan and the priest who officiated Mass was wearing khakis. I had never seen a priest not wearing black slacks outside of a mission trip in the tropics. Are priests required to wear black trousers?

Priests in the USA wear pretty much what they want. You will also see them in jeans, shorts, and everything else under the sun. If they are older or more traditional, they may wear the black slacks, but it’s not required, nor is it even the norm.

Khakis and a polo shirt are normal suburban wear for all professional guys, so it would be very normal to see the parish priest in such an outfit.

How did you manage to see his khakis if he was celebrating Mass? Did they show up under the vestments? At most when the priest kneels I might catch a quick glimpse of a pants cuff (enough to see it usually as a dark color). Are all tan pants khakis? Could it be a pair of tan dress slacks? Does the term "khaki’ cover other colors and refer simply to cotton trousers? Lots to ponder!

The vestments were shorter than usual. It especially stuck out with the green vestments he was wearing. By khaki I mean manilla folder colored fabric, cotton, wool, or otherwise. I suppose the question is: can priests only wear black trousers when celebrating mass.

It had never even occurred to me, until now, that there might be a rule of any kind stipulating what kind of clothing a priest has to wear under his vestments. Anything that he could suitably wear in public, walking to church before Mass or having his lunch in a restaurant afterward? I don’t see why not.

standard ship working uniform for navy catholic chaplains was khaki shirt & trousers…

i say “was” because things may’ve changed in the politically correct modern navy…

We have had this discussion before. The priests wear what they want under their vestments. See for example this thread.

Can a priest choose which clothes to wear during Mass? Liturgy and Sacraments
Shorts and a t-shirt? LOL. I have friends who have done it.
There is always somebody getting bent out of shape about this though. We had a person a few months ago on here having a fit because a priest wore shorts under his vestments and a pair of Crocs when celebrating Mass.

I’ve never stopped to think what my pastor is wearing under his vestments.

I haven’t either because what matters most is that he is wearing the vestments, not whether he has jeans, dress pants or cargo shorts underneath. Our priests are all Capuchins, they wear their clothes, their brown robe and then the vestments over them. Pretty hot for them in the summer. No wonder they wear shorts.
