Hi there!

I want to ask all of you a question. Can Catholics use non-Catholic Items like…

Incense sticks and cones, crystals, colored candles and the like

For example, every day when I say my morning prayers and any other devotions (like praying the rosary), I use incense sticks to accompany my prayers and to serve as an offering to God. And I also have some gems and crystals as decorations.

I also like to light, colored candles for prayer aside from white and votive candles.

I also wear bracelets that don’t have saints or crosses.

Can we use these things as Catholics?

God Bless!

Depends on for what you are using them.

It’s fine to burn incense to God. We do that at church. If you want to do it at home, great.

God doesn’t demand that every candle you use at home be white or votive. If you want to light a colorful candle in his honor that’s fine with him.

As for the gems and crystals, God made those. They’re beautiful examples of his work. If you want to put some on your home altar to honor God, that’s fine. Aaron and his priests wore gems to honor God, as we see in Scripture. Gems have been used throughout history as part of churches and sacramentals to honor God. There’s nothing “non-Catholic” about them unless you are misusing the gem in order to tune up your chakras or some other new-age thing.

As for the bracelets, I’m not sure how wearing a jewelry item affects your worship at all. If it has a non-Christian symbol on it then don’t use it as part of worship. If it’s just some secular bracelet you like to wear, then likewise it doesn’t have anything to do with your worship, it’s just something you like to wear.

Just check where you get the gems/crystals from . Most new age crystal shops have done pagan rituals like the burning of sage . Purchase from maybe a geologist ? Thats what the orthodox monastry does when painting with crystals.

Some Catholic parishes light the four week advent candles, using the liturgical colours for those Sundays, instead of white which is more common in some places. Some have a larger candle in the middle symbolising Christ some don’t. Other parishes have a green wreath around the candles.
