Can concupisence of the eyes be a mortal sin?

I struggle with custody of the eyes sometimes.

For example, today I saw a photo on the wall and it looked out of the corner of my eye that a girl was dressed in “revealing” attire. In a momentary lapse, my eyes darted to the picture just to “catch a glimpse” of what was there to be seen without dwelling upon it. Turns out that it wasn’t revealing attire at all! However, did I sin because of my desire to see and my act of looking?

If you don’t know if it is mortal sin then it isn’t.

This does not sound like sin but its hard for any of us to know for sure without knowing your intention when you saw it.

No. It was automatic, like a conditioned reflex, not deliberately intended.

A person who is exposed to a lot of revealing images may become psychologically conditioned to look for them. Unfortunately there is a lot of stuff like that on television and other media. The effect is reversible; if you do not seek out such images or let your mind dwell on them, those intrusive thoughts and automatic reactions may come less often.

Even I am not sure of my intention, it happened so fast. I think I thought I could glance at it without lusting over it.

Based on your other thread, you are likely scrupulous.

Please follow Don Ruggero’s good advice on your other thread, and do not bring these types of questions onto a forum full of strangers.

Please instead discuss them with your confessor.
