Hello. I’m new to the forum and new to Catholicism. I am converting to catholic and shortly be entering the rcia. I wanted to know can, as a convert from protestant, I get confirmed and do I choose a new name? Also where is the name placed? Is it an extra middle name. Thank you.
Alex

If you have already been baptized, then when you are received into the Church you will receive the other sacraments of initiation, Confirmation and Eucharist.

Choosing the name of a patron saint is a pious custom in some places but not in others. If your parish does it then yes, you will choose a patron saint and use the saint’s name during the confirmation. The name is not a legal name. The only time it is used is during the ceremony itself. Instead of saying “Mouseguard, be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit,” the priest will say “[Saint-name], be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

I entered the Catholic Church this year, from the CofE. Choosing my confirmation name was interesting and educational, as I read about the lives of many female saints before choosing Teresa, after St Teresa Benedicta.

It was a moving experience to have the priest call me by my confirmation name. 🙂

The news is ALL good:)

Yes you can {actually “have too”} choose a Confirmation name. Usually {but not always} of a Saint and your gender. The name is not usually used EXCEPT by the Church; and you as a reminder of this new Covenant you have freely chosen to enter into through the Sacrament of Confirmation.🙂

God Bless you,
Patrick
