Can good Protestants get to heaven?

A friend and former Catholic says the Cath Church would say that no matter how good a person is, that person cannot get to heaven. His mother in law is a protestant and an absolutely loovely person. I said I did not think he was correct…because she did not have knowledge of the cath.Church and its teaching…she could still get to heaven.
Pls help
