Can he be baptised?

There’s someone that wants to be baptised. He is abt 50 yo. He’s sick; having complication and very low chance of get well again. His wife is catholic, but he’s not. He wants to be baptised, but the priest that I’ve asked refused to do it and said that if he gets well he can join RCIA. I’m just afraid that it won’t happen as it happened before that a patient died without being baptised.
The question is, can he be baptised in this circumstances?

Call another Priest. He absolutely can be baptised.

Call another priest and explain the situation to him.

If you can’t find a priest call the diocese. It will probably be necessary for someone to give him private instructions. I have had one case of an elderly lady; also a couple of cases where the catechumen had to be out for a month or two for the birth of a child. In each case the sponsor attended all the RCIA meetings, and then relayed the information in a one on one with the catechumen. Can you volunteer to do this?

Yes he can be baptised especially as that is his intention and depending on how critical he is (i.e. if a priest might be too late to get there) his wife can baptise him.

Thanks for all the response, I’ve asked my parish priest about it and he is willing to baptised this person. If nothing goes wrong, he’ll be baptised tomorrow evening

If the priest won’t do it, and if the man is near death, by all means, do it yourself. It is just as valid if you do it; and if his life is in danger it is just as licit. Have him say the apostles Creed. Make sure he understands it and believes it and then baptise him.

All you have to do is pour water on his head, and at the same time say “I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost”.

Ah! I forgot to tell the good news. He was baptised on 22 September 2006.
