Can helping elderly parents be considered part of our tithe?

My wife’s parents are both elderly, her father is very ill and mother is unable to work anymore. In order to ensure they can pay their bills we send monetary supplements every month which equal 5% of our gross income. We tithe up to 10% (in addition to the money for the in-laws) of our gross income to our parish…we have 4 children (under 5 years old).

Would we be out of line with the church’s teachings to think that we are still tithing 10% of our gross income to the church and charity… if we cut our actual parish tithe down to 5% and include the 5% going to the elderly parents?

Thank you.
