Can holy water be refridgerated?

Hello all!

I recently got a holy water font for my room (hung near the door), and a bottle which I filled w/ holy water from my local parish’s baptismal font (Fr. said I could :P). In any case, the water seems a bit warm - so just out of curiousity - can I refridgerate the bottle of holy water so that when the holy water in the font has been all used up I can replace it w/ cool water?

I’m no expert but room temp seems to be the way to go here. It will be that way in the font in a matter of minutes anyway once you refill it. Keep the holy water in a clearly marked container in room near the font to make it handy to refill.

Don’t put it in the fridge - I am just too concerned someone may drink it by mistake.

It’s in a holy water bottle, but I don’t know if drinking holy water’d be bad. 😉

I bought two 1 gallon waters at the store, took them to my priest and had him bless them. Then I labeled them and put them in the fridge. This worked well for me.
 
Well, nothing happened to me. :hmmm: Our parish priest blessed our bread for last Thanksgiving and we ate that. None of us experienced anything unusual. I think there was an old custom of the blessing of St. Anthony’s bread a long time ago. I’ve heard Lourdes water is okay to drink.
 
Drinking Holy Water can be good for those praying for a healing or for those who simply want to consume this sacramental for a pious reason with faith. It is not a potion but God can certainly work through it like He does with Lourdes Water.

However, you should for all health purposes have your own water blessed instead of since it is much cleaner to use water that you bring rather than taking old holy water from the fount or a holy water tank which might be contaminated or unhealthy to drink from especially if there were immersions in it or if its been there for months.

Yes, water can be refrigerated.
 
in the Eastern rites people drink holy water on the Theophany (baptism of Jesus) and then are allowed to take some home.
 
does the priest still exorcize the water when blessing it? Why dont they exorcize it ne more?
 
I don’t think it should be any problem as long as you give it the respect it earn, and that nobody drinks of it.

It’s a sin to drink Holy Water?
 
In my local indult church, we exorcize holy water and I have had a gallon exorcized. I have also had large amounts of salt exorcized. I do sometimes drink this holy water in a small amount. It is not a sin and I know some drink it for healing.

From my experience, some charistmatics exorcize not only holy water and salt but also oil.

Feel free to ask your priest to bless your own gallons of water be it with the traditional exorcism or the new blessing.
 
In Eastern Orthodoxy, we drink the water blessed for Theophany, take a bottle home and keep until next year. We are encouraged to drink a bit every morning, reverently.

It doesn’t NEED to be refridgerated - it remains fresh all year long! It really does! 🙂
 
The Apologist forum gets this question from time to time. The reply to the post dated October 20, 2005 on “Should holy water be used for bathing and drinking?” indicates that holy water is not for either purposes and cited Canon 1171. I also remember reading or hearing the same thing elsewhere too.
 
Well, bathing is not something to do with Holy Water. However drinking a small portion for healing or mixing it piously with beverages is okay. There is no sin if done piously and I mean piously with faith not as a magical potion.

I find it difficult to believe that there could be this much conversation about Holy Water ??? The whole idea of Holy Water is a little difficult for me. What’s the point? Does sticking your finger in Holy Water before you bless yourself make the blessing somehow different ? I have trouble with our Church’s tradition of blessing inanimate things !!!
 
I would still suggest conferring with one of the apologists here on the Ask an Apologist forum for a definitive answer if only to confirm there is no issue of drifting into superstition or of imbuing a sacramental with “magical powers” associated with drinking it. I don’t believe there is anything advocating the drinking of holy water in the Catholic Church (Latin). Holy water is a sacramental that is used for blessing people and objects. We use it upon entering Church to remind us of our baptism, for protection from the evil one, and to remind us of our sins. We can also use it in our homes before retiring for the night or upon entering or leaving. External blessing should be sufficient. Is it a sin to drink it? I don’t know. Is it necessary to drink it or does its effects increase by drinking it? Not as far as I can tell but those on the Apologists forum would know the answer.
