What are the implications of a Catholic being employed in ministry, specifically in my case in music ministry, by a Protestant church? I know that I would never participate in their communion services, but are there other issues that would conflict with my Catholicism?

Yes. The whole idea of a Catholic acting as a “minister” in a non-Catholic church is problematic in and of itself. Catholics may not acts as “ministers” in any Christian church or community but their own. Under certain circumstances, they may perform services for non-Catholic churches (e.g., office, janitorial), but they may not act in any way that gives the impression that they are in pastoral, ministerial, or other forms of communal service to the church. Regarding musical services, if playing the piano is merely a job, much like playing the piano for patrons in a bar, it might be acceptable. Even then, if there is an appearance of “ministry” (as there apparently is here), or if there is possibility of temptation from the faith (as there can be from constant exposure to non-Catholic preaching), then such a job is highly inadvisable.

If there is serious and immediate need for paying work, playing music at this church could be done as a short-term solution, so long as it is considered a paying job and there is no danger to one’s Catholic faith. (Of course, this presumes that you will not be receiving Protestant communion and will be meeting the Sunday/holy day obligation to attend Mass in a Catholic church.) But I can only recommend continuing the search for another long-term job and moving on from this particular place of employment as soon as possible.
