Hey everyone, I’m attending RCIA and want to ask one of the Sisters who is a member of the convent near my Church to be my sponsor when the time comes.

I feel that I have a special spiritual relationship with her. I bumped into her when going to my very first mass (and church!) by myself, and she guided me through and has explained everything, not just at my first mass but since then - I always sit next to her. She’s given me gifts and has gently corrected me when I’ve done/said something wrong in mass (i.e made the sign of the cross at the reading of the gospel instead of making the “know the word, speak the word…” etc gesture) and has also made sure my hymn book is at the right page, etc. Also given me lots of encouragement for continuing to go to RCIA (I’ve been going for 3 weeks now and haven’t missed them yet).

I feel that if I was to ask someone the only one would be her, especially as I don’t really know anyone else yet well enough to ask them. Not only that, but this Sister has been with me since the very beginning.

Sorry if this is a stupid question!

Oh, also, how does having a sponsor at confirmation work? What responsibilities would I have towards her as a sponsor if she does accept/if I can?

Yes, you can ask Sister to be your sponsor. A sponsor needs to be Catholic and in good standing with the Church - so a Sister should definitely qualify 🙂

Having a good relationship with one’s sponsor will greatly enhance your Journey of Faith.
I don’t know if there’s any “official” obligations towards that person - but you should definitely treat them with respect and be thankful for all they do for you.
Much as you might treat a Grandmother or favorite Aunt, etc…
I always remember my Sponsor on her Birthday and at Christmas, etc…
And after the RCIA process is done, you might offer a gift as a Thank You - something personal or thoughtful??

Great question - no stupid questions, just sometimes stupid answers - LOL

Thanks 😃 I won’t ask her just yet, will ask closer to Easter.

Absolutely - but why wait - this is a journey - not a one night event - if she is to be your sponsor she may want to do work with you on the side to help prepare you as well as work after to make sure you continue to live your faith.

Also do not be surprised if she tells she needs to pray on it and come back to you with an answer. This is not a reflection of you - this is often a normal response for those that live a religious life - all decisions of this magnitude should be made with prayer - also she also may need permission of her convent depending on the rules of her house but may not want to put the Mother Superior on the spot. If she gives you that answer best to thank her and wait for that answer and pray for God’s will.

A Sister would be an excellent sponsor. 😃
