I am starting to discern if I have a calling to either or both. This process will take me at least a couple years because although I am 38, I have just in the last year come home to The Church and will be receiving Confirmation early next year. I read on a Dominican laity website that you need to be 18 and a fully initiated Catholic for at least two years. But that is ok. All in God’s time.

Any info or suggestions out there from anyone on either Domicans in the Bay Area of CA or Opus Dei? First thing I am trying to do is establish a good habit and discipline in my prayer life.

You would have to speak to both of them, but in general it is encouraged to pick one. That doesn’t mean you have to avoid the other, you could even keep many of the commitments, but that you don’t over commit yourself.

Get with “barbfromtucson”. She assisted me with a similar question. She is knowlegable about the chapters but is on vacation for this week.

I learned of a chapter in Oakland after speaking with some of our new Dominican sisters here in Granite Bay (Sacramento). There is also a new chapter locally here in Sacramento.

Discernment is tough, I know. Charisms can also be hard to decipher. Pray to the Holy Spirit and continue to ask for clarity. But I’ve also had it suggested to me to use discretion when contemplating orders; some have different “styles” of spirituality unique unto themselves.

So yet again, this brings you back to discernment. Hang in there and pray……

Peace to you,
