The local Syro-Malabar Church has started a drive to give Communion in the hand based on the fear that a drop of saliva from one person might spread AIDS to another. I think this is pure propaganda and I have never heard of anyone’s catching any disease at Holy Communion. (Note be all kiss the same cross on Good Friday and nobody has ever caught anything). I also doubt if AIDS can be transmitted in this way.

James,

While this link does not address the rules or practices of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church concerning the dispensing of the Eucharist, it does answer your question about viruses being spread via a shared chalice. If you have any further questions or concerns that are not answered by these links, please contact Catholic Answers directly.
