Can I get a priest to be a sponsor for my wedding?

I don’t have much choice in getting a male sponsor for our wedding. And since sponsors are meant to become like second parents, to give sound advice, I wonder if I could pick a Catholic priest? He was a good mentor back in college.

Actually, you do have a choice: Catholic weddings do not require sponsors. It is a custom in some Catholic cultures for the bride and groom to choose “sponsors” as a means of honoring friends or family, but there is no requirement to do so by the Church. If you choose to follow this custom, then a priest would not be an appropriate choice since wedding sponsors are expected to assist the couple financially.
