My first husband and I divorced in 1980 after 5 years of marriage. I divorced him because he was physically abusive. I am now remarried (since 1998) to a person who is an agnostic - does that matter?. Over the years I have gone to Church sporadically, but now I go weekly and I have been rediscovering my Catholic heritage. I want to do it right and I believe in order to follow the rules I need to have my first marriage annulled. How do i do that? Can I do that?

Thank you,

Hi,

It may be possible to annul your first marriage. I encourage you go the Catholic Church you attend and ask to speak to a priest. He can determine how to handle the annulment matter. Being married to an agnostic will not prevent you from having your marriage blessed. If you live with your current husband in a celibate way, you may go to Confession and receive Holy Communnion. You are in our prayers.
