I am still on my own journey toward becoming a catholic and it won’t be done until long after my first child’s birth. My mother in law is a catholic and I am wondering if I can get her to get my child baptized as a catholic in my stead ? Any help is appreciated.

Talk to your pastor. It is a pastoral decision, I have never seen a priest refuse baptism in that situation (person in conversion process).

You don’t need to have someone “in your stead”. You can ask for baptism. See:

Can. 868 §1. For an infant to be baptized licitly:

1/ the parents or at least one of them or the person who legitimately takes their place must consent;

2/ there must be a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be delayed according to the prescripts of particular law after the parents have been advised about the reason.

Where is your husband in this? Is he a Catholic?
