Can I get remarried while waiting on an annullment?

I was previously married in the Catholic Church. The marriage later failed, and the divorce was finalized. I feel in my heart that God was not the center of the marriage. I think my former wife and I both went through the motions of the premarriage process and going through the marriage without fully recognizing the consequences of being a husband and wife. Personally, I was certainly not the spiritual leader that I should have been.

Now, I look forward to being remarried while being a renewed Catholic. Is it it ok to remarry while waiting on an annullment and have our marriage blessed once the annullment is finalized?

Also, would it be considered adultery assuming I do remarry and the annullment does not go through?

Dear Kevin,

If your marriage is found to be null it will not be the result of your feelings, but the result of objective facts. If and when that marriage is annulled, then you will be free to marry in the Church. Until then your civil marriage is not considered a valid marriage by the Church. You cannot marry validly until it is determined that you are free to marry. At the present you are not allowed to receive Holy Communion until you are married in the Church—unless you live a celibate life-style. Then you may go to Confession and receive Holy Communion.
