I want to give my extended family brown scapulars so that they don’t suffer eternal fire.

Do I need to have them blessed by a priest first? & also does the priest have to use the specific brown scapular formula or can it be a general blessing?

Thanks 😃

Sorry, but no. The blessing is conferred to the person not the scapular. So when a brown scapular needs replacing it doesn’t need to be blessed because the wearer should already be invested in the scapular.

My brown scapular is broken and I can no longer wear it. What is the remedy?

It is a good thing to be concerned about your family.

It is not a good thing to attempt to use the scapular in such a superstitious manner.

I’m trying to get them to convert/deepen their faith. I thought this would help.

It certainly could do that. A rosary or other sacramental could do so too, or a small booklet on the Faith, or an invitation to Mass with you.

Keep up the good work of living a good example and continuing to be inviting towards them.

You may buy a new one and begin wearing it; it doesn’t need to be blessed but I don’t know that there is anything wrong if you want the scapular blessed by a priest. Just know that if you were invested in the brown scapular that a additional blessing isn’t necessary. The broken one should be burned or buried.

You want to give them a blessed GREEN scapular then. The Brown Scapular requires that the PERSON be enrolled in the confraternity and agrees to perform the duties that go with the scapular.
