Can I marry without taking marriage prep classes?

I am a 51 year old Catholic widow of 6 years. I was married in the Church for 25 successful years. I wish to marry another Catholic gentleman who is 52. Is there any way to opt out of the marriage prep classes? My priest is new to this country and wants to follow all the rules. When he mentioned Natural Family Planning, I told him my body was past producing children. He insists we take this course anyway because it is required. I really do not want to take marriage prep classes for six months with a 30ish year old couple “teaching” me how to be married, either. Is there anyway for us to just have a quiet ceremony with just our very immediate families in attendance? We want to do the right thing and be married in our faith.

Hi,

I suggest that you go to a parish that has an American pastor and tell him your situation. He may be willing to receive you into his parish and adapt the marriage requirements according to your situation. You might also check with the diocese and inquire if it has a special program for people in your situation. You are in our prayers.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
