I recently bought a brown (Crusader) scapular, and attached to it are a St. Benedict medal and a crucifix (they’re very thin and light). I usually wear a St. Benedict medal/crucifix anyway, and I’d like to remove these two items from the scapular.

Can I do that?

Yes. You can remove them. And make sure you get enrolled in the brown scapular.

As John has said, yes you can remove them. In fact, such medals are not supposed to be attached to the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel because it is not a mere scapular, it is the habit of the Carmelite Order and so should have nothing on it or attached to it.

If you do get scapulars with pictures sewn on them, you don’t have to take them off, however. But, the idea is that one is joining the Carmelites in their devotion for Mary, in their spirituality, and prayer life, so we should do as the Carmelites have asked and not attach medals and other things to the “brown” scapular.

So the answer is not only “yes,” but an emphatic YES!

Let it be done according to your word! 😉

I was thinking about attaching my Miraculous Medal, but now… I think not.

I intend to enroll soon… hopefully tomorrow morning.
