I recently bought NRSV Catholic edition bible. I’m starting to think there could be a better option for me. I’m a cradle catholic but only really starting to read scriptures now. I have a lot to learn. When I’m reading my bible I have about 3 different tabs open on my phone with commentaries etc.
I’m wondering if I should buy another bible with more of a study guide attached.
Can anyone advise?
Photos of the inside of your bibles would be great so I could get an idea of what is out there and what would work best for me.
Thanks

I got all kinds of Bibles! I have a job interview later, so I have to prepare for that, but I WILL get back to you.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) My first Catholic Bible. Some people think it is too gender neutral, but I have seen worse. Let’s read John 3:16 in it “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life”.(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) My third Bible. The RSVCE 2nd edition . I had the first one, but my nephew poured water on it. John 3:16 in it “For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten So , that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life”. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) John 3:16 text, same as RSVCE(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) This is the Douay Rheims. The spelling can be archaic and it isn’t for everyone, but it is a good version. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that those who believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting”.

I really like the commentary in the Didache Bible. It uses the RSV-2CE (or the NABRE) with commentary from the Catechism. This link has example pages.

A couple more (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) This is actually one of my sister’s Bibles, as is the next one (as I live with her). It uses the NABRE, which is what Americans use at Mass. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him shall not perish, but might have eternal life”. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) This is the Good News Bible Catholic edition. It is the most dynamic translation I have here for a Catholic Bible. John 3:16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life”. Hope I have helped!

I have co!!acted many Bibles over the past years. Truthfully they are all good. I personally like the New American Standard best. Unfortunately the one I have is not a Catholic edition but I prefer it. Could I recommend that you look into a book by Mark P. Shea, Making Senses Out of Scripture. This is helpful no matter the translation you decide on.

Thank you @adamhovey1988 for the effort of sending those photos. All very helpful! Which do you prefer… Douay Rheims?

@MikeInVA That’s the sort of commentary I’ve found useful when looking online so I’ll look further into the Didache Bible. Thanks!

They all have their pros and cons, but RSVCE is good, as it is on the more literal end but not too hard to read. The Douay Rheims is good, but can be a bit difficult.

I got this Catholic Youth Bible at a retreat I went on in 10th grade.

I have read and marked up all four Gospels with this Bible, its very wide from all the sticky notes in it lol.

This was a Confirmation gift from my parents.

This was the Bible we used for a Biblical Studies class I took in college.

I got this New Testament Bible at the dollar store (for $1 lol) and I have read and marked up approximately 50% of it so far. Really enjoy the translation.

These are my Dad’s (he is an Catholic ordained deacon and uses these to write homilies often, lots of good commentary).

This was the Bible commentary we used for the class I took in college. It is written by a Protestant but it is ecumenical and focuses much more on the historical aspects of the Bible rather than theological differences. I found it very useful.

Catholic commentary on the Bible I got for Christmas.

Visual images that go a long with the Bible and make the Bible really come alive as not just a collection of writings but as real places with historical evidence for them.

Bottom up: 1966 Jerusalem Bible (NT) bought second hand, RSVCE (1969) present from a close family friend who was a Dominican, it was his own Bible, Douay-Rheims Challoner (1914), rescued from being burnt and Douay-Rheims Challoner (1955), second hand shop.

Apart from these I also use a CPDV (Catholic Public Domain Version) Bible app and a New Community Bible (CE) Bible app. The latter has great notes and I’m considering buying a physical version of it.
