I just read a homily from a very well respected priest and he stated that “There is hardly a store that is not open on Sunday, and even worse, Catholic people go to them on Sunday. It is a mortal sin!” It really hit me between the eyes. I attend daily Mass and holy Communion, but there was a time when I was very much a cafeteria-type Catholic. I didn’t attend Mass this morning because I have thought of all of the times I have shopped on Sundays. My question is this: Can I buy a cup of coffee on Sunday? Can I get a manicure or go to the grocery store? When does it become a mortal sin, or is it always a mortal sin to patronize shopping malls and grocery stores and salons on Sunday, unless you are in dire need?
