So I am going to dive right in. My sister wants me to be the Godparent of her son who will be born this August. I am pregnant as well and due in July. She’s had her mindset since she got pregnant that she wants me to be the God-parent of her child but I am stuck as to whether or not I qualify because I do want the best for her child. I am pregnant, and I am not living with the father of my child. I live with my parents. We do still have sex every now and then (sorry, I want to give the best description of the situation). I try to abstain from sex but yes, we all do fall short. I am a practicing Catholic, I attend mass by myself every week and participate every so often in extra events and I was a lector up until I got pregnant because I didn’t want to look like a bad example. I feel that because I do have sex every so often that does not qualify me. Aside from the answers I receive, I am also going to talk to the priest at the church I attend.
Thank you.

I really think your priest would be the best person to advise you. He certainly knows you better than any of us.

To qualify to be a godparent one must be fully initiated, baptism, first communion, and confirmation, and be a practicing Catholic. If married, it must be a sacramental marriage and if single, must be living according to that state of life.

In my opinion, it would depend on if you are making use of the sacrament of reconciliation.

Of course your priest will be able to best advise you in this.

Agree. Your pastor is the one who will have to sign a letter that you are a “Catholic in good standing” in order to be a baptismal sponsor. Sit down with him.

Congratulations on your baby and prayers for a healthy pregnancy!!
