I live with the father of my one year old son but we’re not civilly married.
He’s atheist and doesnt want to get married civilly let alone on a church… 😦

Can I still receive the communion or will that be against the church laws?

No you can’t. However, I agree with Marty and suggest you go and see a priest and talk over your situation with him.

Wait a minute… more questions need to be asked.

If you are not sleeping together or doing what married couples do sexually then I personally see no issue. Giving bad example is the only thing I can see that is questionable. This is coming from a guy who lived with his future wife 3 month before they were married.

I can tell you it was very hard to keep the 6th and 9th commandments and it was not a good example for my friends or family. I was young and foolish.

economics, the child, and other issues can be part of this situation. So these opinions are just that, talk to your priest or religious.

Please see your priest.

You are in a difficult position. You live with a man who has no intention of marrying you, and you have a son with him. What do you plan to do, just keep living with him? That is not a solution. Ultimately, you need to make a plan to end this go-nowhere relationship with a man hostile to your faith and to marriage.

If you are living with him in a sexual relationship, and have no intention to stop, then it is hard to see a path back to the sacraments until you make the decision to change your situation. If you live in the same house for the sake of your son, but plan to be chaste (no sexual relationship), then there is a possibility of resuming the sacraments under the direction of your priest as you work to move out of the relationship.

Please seek guidance and spiritual counsel from your priest, and if you need material assistance he can give you information on church sponsored initiatives that might help you.

The first step is to talk to your priest.

Welcome to the forums my sister. The answer is not an easy one and a good Priest will guide you.

You are my heroine for doing what you need to do to take care of your child and I will pray for you tonight.

P.S. - Like 1ke, I think you need to look long term here. If you think you must live with the father as it is the only way he will support your child, please think about that again. A man has a responsibility to his children regardless of his marital state or who he is living with. Does he love you? What will he do to make you happy? If he will not marry you or is hostile to your faith, please ask yourself what value is he bringing to your relationship aside from material or emotional support of your child.

The best answer to the OP was given in the first reply. Speak to a priest. Her personal situation should be of no concern to any of us or we might judge her. That’s not up to any of us.

Why should his feelings/preferences be more important or valid than yours?

Are you strong enough to say, in that case we won’t live like husband and wife?

You are in my prayers.

Many, many people here on CAF share their “personal situation”. This one is no different.🤷

I do agree that she needs to speak to a priest as well.

Welcome OP to CAF, keep posting!

Please speak to your priest and even though I understand this man is the father of your child if he is unwilling to learn to treat you with the respect due to the mother of his child then please find one that will.

I recommend reading this document from the Vatican, an excerpt:

I – “De facto Unions”***
Social aspect of de facto unions

(2) The term “de facto unions” includes a whole series of many heterogeneous human realities whose common element is that of being forms of cohabitation (of a sexual kind) which are not marriage. De facto unions are characterized precisely by the fact that they ignore, postpone, or even reject the conjugal commitment. Grave consequences are derived from this.

Thank you for your kind replies, reading through them made me ask myself more questions.

For quite some time I believe God has been calling me to His Church, I wasn’t baptized as a child due to my to-be godparents were overseas (or so I was told) and it was postponed and eventually the baptism never happened.

I would love to raise my baby as a catholic, going to church at least every Sunday and enroll him in the church scouts as I believe they have so much to give to a child’s development of social skills and faith.

I love my “husband” he’s baptized as catholic, he just doesnt believe in God and thinks the Church is too old fashioned.

I’m thinking of going through the RCIA, but if I can’t get all the Sacraments there is no point going, is it not? Since I won’t be abe to be in a state of grace with God if I keep living with the father of my child. Yet I don’t want to believe that if somehow I’m being called to Church I would have to do so away from the man I truly love. 🤷

Perhaps you need to truly reflect seriously on the relationship you are in. Even though you love him and wish to remain with him what is he actually bringing to the relationship? I don’t know you but one thing is for sure…you are a good person and good mother. You put your child first. You also have to think about yourself too. Don’t you want your child to live with parents who are married? I have no doubt that you both love him but your child will ask questions someday and examples must be set. Even if you stay in this relationship with only one Catholic parent,is he not willing to give you that…living in a married state? If not…you have to ask yourself…does he really care about your wants or is he being selfish? Seek out spiritual counseling…with him,or without him. Peace!
