Since I’m not officially a Catholic, I was wondering if I could participate in Lent? Obviously I can’t take receive the eucharist yet or receive the ashes on my forehead for Ash Wednesday, but can I fast on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Lenten Fridays and Sundays (If I am not mistaken, these are days of abstinence). I would also like to give up some bad habits and read my Bible more to get closer to God and better understand the faith. Sorry if this seems weird of me to ask, as I’m not a real Catholic yet, but I feel like it would benefit me and my relationship with God. Thank you for any help you can provide and God Bless!

Yes, you can participate in various aspects of Lent.

You’re welcome to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday if you would like to. This is not something that is limited to Catholics.

You can follow the three traditional pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This page from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops explains more about these practices: usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/lent/index.cfm

Have a blessed Lent!

Thank you! I will read this article. I may go receive ashes now that I know this, I wasn’t aware I could before now. Thank you again for your help!

You’re welcome. I hope your Lent is everything you hope for!

Anybody can “take part in Lent.”

Unlike Holy Communion, Lent is not a sacrament, and even some Protestant churches practice it.

We know Protestants who come every Ash Wednesday for their ashes. It’s good to see them there. 🙂

Participating in Lent brought me closer to the Faith as a Catechumen. God Bless You for researching your possibilities!
