Can I use my Xbox One that was bought on Sunday?

Hello all,

Just last night, my parents surprised my brother and I with an Xbox One including “Battlefield 4” and “Call of Duty: Ghosts.” I would have been excited to have gained such presents, but there were some details that made me apprehensive. Chief among those details is the fact that they bought this on a Sunday (if you wish to know the minor detail, it was that I wanted to earn the Xbox One myself through selling my old games). As you all know, Sunday is a day when all are to rest and no one should work or obligate another to work needlessly. Obviously, my parents obligated someone to work in order to purchase these items. I have a feeling that, if I were to use the Xbox One and its games, then I would be an accessory to their crime and empower them to continue doing such things in the future.

My question for all of you is “Would it be morally permissible for me to make use of the Xbox One knowing that it was bought on the Sabbath Day?”

I would say it is fine, although I am no expert and other commenters let me know how wrong I am… often

I think to not use it would cause more problems in your family. As an aside Battlefield 4 is amazing I have 360 not the One (which is currently out of commission due to a corrupt xbox update)

The store your parents bought the console at would have been open on Sunday even if your parents never walked through the door, so your parents didn’t obligate anyone to work that day. I’d say it’s fine to use the console.

That is a good point, but I always thought even though a person is already obligated to work on a Sunday, one should not further obligate that person as part of the tenets of Catholicism.

I think you are being a bit scrupulous (as your name suggests). Your parents probably should have waited until Monday to buy the gift but you were not a part of that decision making. The xbox is there and you using it would have nothing to do with their purchase. If you didn’t use it wouldn’t that also be quite wasteful?

I second this 100%. Please talk to your pastor about what it means to keep the Lord’s Day holy.

Even the Vatican “makes people work” on Sundays. At a Sunday papal Mass, there are dozens of ushers, security personnel, Swiss Guards, photographers, and the usual papal entourage.

^^^^ This. For you to call shopping on Sunday “their crime” is WAY over the top. In addition to scrupulosity, indicates a certain “holier than thou” attitude toward your parents. Please talk to your pastor about that, also.
