Whenever they refer to clearly protestants ideas, I just skim over it, but they’re very helpful for me to understand the scripture’s context. I also try to read the ECF but they’re a bit hard to find and understand. Can i refer to both the early church fathers/catholic commentaries and non-catholic?

Absolutely. I would just caution you to take them with a grain of salt.

With caution yes, for those well grounded in their faith. Often converts are more fine tuned to the sometimes subtle differences between Catholic and Protestant beliefs.

My take is, if the work is good, I would not throw the baby out of the window with the bath tub.

There are many good Protestant Bible scholars and commentators, their work which are easily available. Instead of throwing them out, I would allow them to compliment our belief.

However, when their commentaries are in conflict with Catholic doctrines, then obviously they should be rejected. We should be discerning and take cognizance of that.

God bless.

Fulton Sheen thought so. At about the 31 minute mark below he ardently recommends the liberal Protestant William Barclay for reading during a Holy Hour of Adoration, even allowing that Barclay is in error on some things
