I will always go to mass every Sunday and Holy day, but can I work after? I am in high school and want to get a job at a restaurant.

Hello, im also in high school. I think it’s important to avoid work on Sunday if you can, yet there are times when I too must clean an office on Sunday because I am too busy other days - actually thats an excuse that I shouldn’t use at all. I realize you have to get money for college or to support yourself, but Sunday should be set aside for Him and Him alone. It’s a hard lesson for me to learn too because I’m so busy I try to use Sundays as catch up days - but thats not right. As for moral and sin concerns - I’ll leave that to another poster.

As Melissa said, keep the Lord’s Day and He will bless you all your days, even if it is difficult to follow His will. Take courage and have some fun on Sundays, the Lord is risen indeed!

The First Precept of the Catholic Church reads in the CCC paragraph 2042: “The first precept (“You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor”) requires the faithful to sancify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord as well as the principal liturgical feasts honoring the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints; in the first place, by participating in the Eucharist celebration, in which the Christian community is gathered, and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such sanctification on these days.”

So to answer your question:

If you would not miss Mass and your work would not impeded sanctification on these days and Sundays and you had a very good reason for accepting that job over another, like for example, your father passed away and your mother is disabled and you are the primary bread winner for the home and if you didn’t take this job your little brothers and sisters and mom would end up homeless, then of course you’d be able to work on Sundays. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath and He reads our hearts.

If on the other hand, you just want that job because it pays better and you want to buy a better looking car that you can only get with the extra tips at this restraunt job vs. a job that would meet your actual needs while not requiring you to work on Sunday even though the pay would be less and you’d not be able to buy a nicer looking car. Again God knows our hearts and our intentions and judges accordingly.

The question boils down to: Do you need the money to make ends meet for those who are dependent upon you or do you want the money - Taking the job are you loving God or are you loving the money?

Hey there.

The church I left (I won’t mention its name but its initials are LDS) had good ideas about keeping Sunday special. Not only are they forbidden to do work on Sunday that is not strictly necessary, but they are not to patronize places of business on Sunday because it forces their workers to work on that day. Obviously, there’s a difference between patronizing a restaurant and patronizing the hospital. Firefighters can work Sundays if necessary, but waiters and office folk really should not unless the need is grave.

Peace,
-MM-
