Can irrational fear of demons open you up more to demonic influence?

I’m really fearful of demons, demonic possession, demonic obsession, etc. I suffer from OCD, so the “topic” of my OCD fears kind of cycles and sometimes settles on demons. Can being intensely fearful of demons make me more susceptible to them?

For example, recently I was chatting with friends about a surveillance video that had been taken in a parish near us, in which there appear to be some sort of spirits moving around the church at night. One friend commented that seeking out the paranormal and such can open you up to bad influences. I got very scared to even talk about that kind of video because I was worried that talking about it might mean opening myself to something evil. But then I ended up mentioning it to a family member despite my worries about opening myself up and since then I’ve felt distracted and not myself and more sinful and I fear that now there may be some demonic influence trying to attack me. It seems like, for a normal non-worried person, talking about a “ghost video” probably wouldn’t invite anything in, but maybe because I was already thinking it might open me up to something bad and spoke of it anyway, maybe it did invite something bad for me. Is this totally ridiculous? And, how fearful should I *really *be of demons? I’m trying to cultivate a rational, rather than irrational, fear.

We can get into the habit of saying short prayers throughout our day, in addition to our regular prayer routine.

Short prayers such as “Jesus I trust in You”, “Blessed Mother place your mantle of protection around me”, and there are many others. Ask the Lord to remove your fear and replace it with His Peace.

Feel free to discuss what you shared with a priest.

It is irrational to have any fear of demons whatsoever, not because they aren’t more powerful than you are, but because the powers of Heaven are infinitely superior to the powers of hell. A less popular - but theologically sound - title that is given to the Blessed Mother is “The Queen of hell”, because she has sovereignty over those spirits, just as she has sovereignty over the spirits of Heaven. They are powerless to disobey her when she sends them scattering, and they tremble in unearthly fear at the mention of her name. If you feel you are being assaulted by hell, just invoke for Divine Aid, and that is the end of it. There is not a ying-yang relationship between Heaven and hell. There is the authority of Heaven, and that is it. Read the book of Job: Satan requires God’s permission for everything he inflicts upon Job, and God only consents in the knowledge that Satan is unwittingly sharpening & sanctifying the soul of Job.

St Anthony of Egypt, while in the desert, was being assaulted by an entire host of demons that came to his vision in the form of various alluring women and gruesome predators. Seeing such a vast, overwhelming number, a theological insight struck him. He laughed, and said (paraphrasing), “If you were capable of harming me, it would require only one of you”.

Yes.

Fear is faith in the thing you are afraid of. Faith in god removes all fear as it matures.

While being afraid of the demonic prevents victory through trust in Christ, remember that Jesus is already victorious. This is just a mop up action.

Satan and his rabble are about to lose the second heaven. They are going to be pushed down to the second heaven (earth) where he will try to grab as many souls as he can before retreating all the way to hell.

Now is the last time to pinion some fallen ones and free your ensnared brothers and sisters.

As you mature you will have more victories and be less afraid.

Just train. His is all out war. Victories in the spiritual spill over into physical reality as do defeats. Be all you can be for Christ and for America. Time to reclaim the homeland and kick the evil aliens off our soil.

Striber demons are more ugly and awful, but it is Christ in you that compels them to give up territory and souls, not your personal power or authority.

Forget about demons. You are giving them power over you. Surrender to Christ. You belong to him and they can do nothing without his permission.

Psalm 27:1
The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be afraid?

You can’t ignore and enemy with that much influence and power.

But you don’t focus on them either.

Anyone who is involved in deliverance ministry knows that a confrontation must take place.

There is a reason why they call us the church militant.

My personal weapons are the rosary, divine mercy chaplet, and miraculous medal. I have lots of holy water as well.

Fear and love are mutually exclusive. Focus on cultivating the former-the other is never of God anyway.

You have got to get over the OCD. “Perfect love casteth away all fear.” Dissolve the fears and the compulsions go away on their own. “All things are possible through Christ who strengthens me.”

i have no fear of demons because I do not believe they exist.

Thanks so much for all your responses. The general consensus seems to be that I need to learn to trust God and minimize fear, and I agree. I definitely could use the reminder more often that God will not allow me to suffer without good reason, and that He is truly all-powerful. I wish the OCD wasn’t so strong, but I am working on it! 😃

If you are being honest (and not just joking), Satan loves it when people dont believe in him, makes his job that much easier.
I didn’t say Satan, I said demons. Maybe it’s a matter of semantics, but when someone says they are afraid of demons, I think they’re envisioning physical demonic creatures. I think of the forces of evil in a less physical way. In any case, just my own opinion.

Okay, now I understand where you are coming from. Of course, the devil and his minions are spirit and have no bodies.

In scripture they are referred to as demons…in Matthew 8:28 it mentions that two demoniacs met Jesus, and in other places it mentions demons as well.

That is why I posed the question I did.

Semantics can be confusing!
