Can Lutheran granddaughters receive Catholic Communion?

My granddaughters were both baptized Catholics but made their first communion at a Lutheran church. They are are nearly 5 and 7 years old. They go with me to church too at a Catholic church. Can they receive the bread here as well?

• They have made first communion at a Lutheran church, indicating that they are now being raised Lutheran.
• They go to a Catholic church with you and you want to know if they can receive “the bread” at your Catholic church.

It sounds to me like there has been a serious breakdown in catechesis in your family. Your son or daughter has chosen to baptize your grandchildren Catholic and take them to a Lutheran church for first communion. Meanwhile, you apparently do not understand the significance of Catholic Communion yourself if you can ask if Lutheran children can receive Catholic Communion and if you can refer to the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ under the appearances of the Eucharistic species as “the bread.”

Your grandchildren should never have been taken to a Lutheran church for first communion. Now that they have though, they cannot receive Catholic Communion. You can take them to Mass with you, if their parents agree, but they cannot participate in Communion. As for you, I can only recommend that you seriously consider learning more about your Catholic faith. Perhaps it will set a good example for your children and grandchildren.
