Yes, men can be attendants to the bride and be in the bride’s section of the wedding party. They would dress in the manner of the male attendants to the groom. Also, male bridal attendants would not be escorted in a processional by the ushers (as is sometimes done with bridesmaids) but would walk alone or in pairs. In a recessional they could be paired with groomsmen but would walk side-by-side as a pair (not arm-in-arm as a couple).
I would like to point out though that there is no set number of attendants a bride or groom may have and so allowing this gentleman to be one of your attendants would not deprive another friend of yours of a place in the wedding. Since male bridal attendants are quite uncommon, it might be best for you and this gentleman to put aside your mutual dislike for each other out of respect for the bride and for him to act as an usher or groomsman in your section of the wedding party.
