Can mormons have Godparents?

A co-worker (mormon) told me today that LDS have Godparents like catholics when they are baptized and that this practice was prominent among Latin mormorns. Is this an official LDS practice or are they just imitating Catholicism?

It’s not common. I grew up Mormon and I didn’t know anyone who had Godparents. Perhaps it’s a more cultural thing among Latin Americans? I don’t know.

There is no LDS cultural tradition of having godparents; but there is no prohibition against it either, as far as I know. In those countries where it might be part of their cultural or national tradition, and they want to continue the practice after they became Mormons, I don’t suppose the Church would object. Other religious traditions have it too; not just Catholic. It is not a legally binding position either. Its role is more symbolic. This is what Wikipedia says about it.

Thank you for your replies, I guess what threw me off was when she stated that “we have the truth and the Mormon church in America doesn’t practice it since we are direct descendants of …(some group I cant recall Nephi?) and they just don’t know it yet”
but thanks for clarifying.
