Can my 8-yr old spend summers with my agnostic parents?

My son will be receiving First Communion this spring. He usually spends summers at my parents’ (several states away). However, my parents are agnostic and do not take him to church. Now that he’ll be receiving Communion and, as far as I understand, is obligated to attend Mass each Sunday, do you think it would still be ok to send him to my parents’ for the summer? I don’t want to hinder his relationship with his grandparents, but I’m concerned about him not attending church for over a month while there.

Hi,

Out of respect for you, your parents should take him to Mass each Sunday. If they are unwilling to do this, then your son needs to stay home for the Summer. Sunday Mass which is the time we come together as a community to acknowledge and give thanks for the shedding of His blood for us. is far too important to skip for even one Sunday when one is well enough to attend. This is a great teching moment for you son–as well as your parents. Jesus, after all, is God! Nothing and no one matters more!
