After reading a bit of Deuteronomy (Or Leviticus) I read a passage that mad my blood run cold. Your cloths cant be made of two fabrics(cotton and wool, for instance) Gasp! Nowdays, nearly all clothes are mixed somewhat! Half my closet was 50% something, 50% something else! Well, now the we’re no longer obligated to not eat pork, can our cloths be abominable half-breeds? And can we eat Ostrich jerky? What about shark?

Again, you are reading the the book of Leviticus out of context of the entire journey of the Chosen People of Israel.

If you really want to know why those particular laws were given then I suggest you participate in a good Bible Study course which takes you through the 14 narrative books of the Bibile so you get the full picture in context, along with the corresponding prophetic books which enhance the story.

See the following link for great suggestions:

Although perhaps this thread is meant to be humorous (?), it does bring up some issues which non-Christians tend to mock. I once had an atheistic ancient history professor who would make much of the passage you cite, and others of its ilk, like “Thou shalt not boil a kid in it’s mother’s milk” (Ex. 23:19, 34:26, Dt. 14:21).

Such verses do demonstrate how perilous is any attempt to interpret/apply Scripture merely individually, without the benefit of knowledge of the ancient Near Eastern world. They are not as absurd as first might appear. Had my hapless history professor been worth his title, he would have known that, due to archeological discoveries over the past century, we know today that such practices as described.were a part of Canaanite idolatry, particularly as associated with magical curses and ritual sodomy…

Insofar as I am not an Ancient Jew, nor a sorcerous Canaanite homosexual, I feel perfectly free to wear mixed garments and eat milk-seethed goat-flesh…

Here’s what I posted on the other thread (for those unwilling to click links):
Found this, which seems to work:
Linen is cloth made from flax, a blue flowered plant cultivated for its textile fibre and its seed called linseed. Garments made of linen were used primarily in the worship of Yahweh. Linen was not to be mixed with wool any more than the sacred is to be mingled with the secular, or truth mixed with error. This law symbolizes, amongst other things, the need to keep holy and secular things apart.
Leviticus 19: 19: Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen
and woollen come upon thee.
The Scriptures tell us that linen was used in the following instances:
  • The Tabernacle curtains and court were made of linen. (Ex 26:1, Ex 27:9)
  • The Temple Veil was linen. (2 Chron.3:14)
  • The Priest’s garments were linen. (Lev.16, 1 Sam.22:18, Eze 44:17-19)
  • The temple singers wore linen. (2 Chron 5:12)
  • The prophet Samuel and king David wore linen ephods on special occasions. (1 Sam.2:18, 2 Sam. 6:14)
  • The state dress of Joseph and Mordecai were made of linen. (Genesis 41:42, Esther 8:15)
  • Heavenly messengers wore linen. (Eze.9:2, Daniel 10:5)
  • The Saviour’s body was wrapped in linen before being placed in the tomb. (Matt.27:59)
  • The Lamb’s Wife will be clothed in linen, which represents holiness and righteousness. (Rev.19:8)
If you read these passages you will see that linen is a special material with rich symbolic meaning. Besides its pure white appearance it has the added advantage that it does not cause sweat as does wool, the material worn by the common working man.
Ezekiel 44: 18: They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen breeches upon their loins; they shall not gird themselves with any thing that causeth sweat.

(Emphasis and italics in the original)

Works for me, unless someone else knows better…

Hope this helps.

God Bless,

I have learned that when Jesus said “cut off your hand if it makes you sin” he wasnt being literal. Shucks, Wish I knew that earilier 😉

Keep reading. Eventually you’ll reach the Acts of the Apostles where you will see that most of the Old Law has been set aside, with specific exceptions (such as sexual sins).

It was mighty brave of them to change God’s specific commandments. Abominations must be more relative than morality (unless sex is involved, of course).

which just goes top show that those famous verses from leviticus are all about paganism and not about homosexuality.

idolatry, when will all those chirstian who go on about ‘sodomy’ get it in to their heads they mean idolaty!

Oh, and once again I bringyou Romans 14:1-20. the passages call those worried about Leviticus ‘weak of faith’, but makes it clear the rules are overturned.

Well the real reason they couldn’t mix fabrics is because dry cleaning had yet to be invented 😃

I agree. Now I’m trying to think of a good one for scallops and lobsters (those sea creatures without scales are quite the abomination also). Maybe it was the lack of a really good accompanying chardonnay…or maybe the water into wine thing hadn’t been perfected yet.

Actually there is a very good medical reason for the prohibtion of eating anything out of the sea that does not have scales!

The cholesteral content of these prohibited items are off the chart compared to beef and pork…

A seafood diet of non-scaled marine life will kill you faster than eating beef!

As this thread seems to have straggled far from the OP, I offer thanks to all who participated, and inform you that this thread is now closed.
