Can my husband be a godfather if he cannot accept communion?

My husband and I, who are both Catholic were married in a wedding chapel and therefore our marriage has not yet been blessed by the church, and since we are both living in mortal sin we cannot take communion. He has been asked to be the godfather to our nephew. Can he accept the obligation even though he is living in mortal sin and cannot accept communion? Thank you for your time.
