Hi am Emily i have a lot of mental health problems, i hear voices and see things
there are times when am delusional and i cant go without medication. Im unsure if i will be seen as catholic because my husband has had a vasectomy, so we dont have children as i couldn’t go through a pregnancy with out my medication and the medication that am on could kill the baby or cause other serious complications. My husband is an atheist and feels that religion is restricting, i have talked to him before about it but he feels like the rules for being catholic or any other religion are restrictive and sometimes obtrusive.
I don’t go to church at all .As my voices tell me to hurt other people but i have never ever hurt anyone also my OCD makes me have obsessive thoughts about me hurting people .
Am waiting for Therapy but av been waiting an year am in the uk so i have to wait until the NHS gets back to me on it i cant afford non NHS
i got married in the church but that was to keep my mum happy or she wouldn’t have come to the wedding
i didn’t have as many problems as what i do have now
my mental health has gotten worse over the last 5 years
( me and my husband was married 7 years ago )
i also have blasphemous thoughts and feel am evil
i walked away from the Catholic church as a teen through trauma
the trauma i still live with every day as i said before am waiting in therapy
i would like to go back to the catholic church but there are many obstacles that i have to get over thats if am even welcomed into the church still

Hi Emily. Its hard to imagine how lucky we are, that neither you nor I can commit any sin that is so great that God cannot forgive. He is just that much more powerful than we are.

I can’t address anything about the mental/emotional health struggles that you describe as they are beyond my prevue.

Religion is not restricting; it is freeing. The “rules” are disciplines that both keep us safe and help us to be at peace. We can never be at peace when we have no discipline. If you try to learn piano by practicing the “rules” 1/2 hour per year, you will never enjoy the mastery of playing. If you are disciplined, by listening to your teacher and committing yourself to daily practice according to the teacher’s rules, you will eventually enjoy the peace and comfort that accompanies the music. It’s hard work, but worth it.

You may not have understood why you couldn’t play soccer on the highway as a child; after all, it was flat and fast and looked like a great place to kick a ball. But you listened to the disciplines of your parents, and it kept you safe. Such is the same with religion. Obedience is freeing. It will keep you at peace in Our Father’s comfort. Not always easy. But it is so much better than the chaos of making up your own rules and changing your mind and back and forth. Just go to Church, kneel before the Blessed Sacrament, and thank Jesus for being there. There’s nothing out there better than that. God Bless you.

Dear Emily, I can tell you without a doubt that you are welcome in the Church, and through the sacrament of reconciliation (and with a contrite heart), you will be forgiven! Please don’t doubt this.

I’m sorry that you’ve been waiting such a long time for proper care. I really don’t know much about the NHS and how it operates, but I do hope you can see someone soon.

Hi Emily. You should speak to a professional in the Church, preferably a priest.
  1. You can be forgiven. The fact you even posted this means you have a conscience.
  2. Don’t concentrate too much on feelings. People think evil things, you are not alone,
and feelings can stir up unwanted stress.
  3. If you and your husband have differences of opinion then speaking together with a professional within the R.C Church will help to answer and maybe alleviate some of both your doubts and come to a solution about how to progress.
I also walked away from the Church in my teens and lived a selfish and evil life and I can tell you now that God forgave me when I came back. I know I am capable of evil even now, I just make sure I keep a check on it, although I fall with the normal stuff. But I pray, and receive the sacraments, and not give up. Obviously hurting people is serious so one must make sure we don’t do that. If you think you might then seek professional help, and it is sad to hear from you how slow the NHS are being, but this does not mean waiting until you are fixed to come to God. We go to God with our imperfections and He helps us along the way…

God loves you, right now, as you are, more than you could ever know.

Please try putting this post in the ‘Ask an apologist’ section, and say you would like the opinion of an active R.C priest.

Also, try praying a Hail Mary tonight, for your worries. I will pray for you too.

God bless.

Your sins can be forgiven. In fact, Christ loves you so much that He died on the cross for you and then rose from the dead. In doing so, He already merited the forgiveness of all your sins, past, present, and future.

If you wish to embrace your salvation, you have to forgive yourself for your imperfections, repent of all voluntary sins, and talk to a parish priest about your situation. The Church is very understanding. She is not like the pharisees of old, but the merciful heart of Christ, the Mighty to Save. You have been baptized. You even say you married in the Church. All you need to do to return to the Church is confess your sins. That’s all.

Meanwhile, if you desire to be forgiven, if you desire to live the Christian life, nothing prevents you from doing your best to live a simple life of love, and reject sin with patience, daily. In doing so, the very desire of confessioncan suffice to attain for you forgiveness divine grace, until the day where you may finally confess.

I would not delay this, though. Talk to any priest in confession. Be simple. “Bless me father, for I have sinned. It has been x days/weeks/months/years since my last confession. [Confess mortal sins you remember in kind and number]. For these and for all sins I may have forgotten and for all the sins of my life I ask God’s pardon.”

If the priest absolves you, your soul will be as clean as when you were baptized. Angels won’t be able to look at the glory of your cleansed soul.

After that, the Church requires that, if it is physically possible (that is, unless prevented by health reasons) you attend Mass on Sunday (or Saturday vigil) and a few Holy Days of Obligation. Sometimes, you may even obtain a dispensation for health reasons. This you discuss with the priest. The Church also requires that you confess and receive Communion at least once a year, on Easter. That’s it.

You know the other commandments. Besides the usual, as a spouse you have a moral duty to refrain from using contraception.

But if you fall, just confess and keep moving forwards.

That’s all I can say for the spiritual aspect.

Now, do not confuse the spiritual with the physical. The issues that you mention concerning your mental health are separate from the spiritual matters. These must be addressed properly with a specialist. Perpahs the priest may advice some Catholic mental health counselor or psychiatrist that can assist, but in any case this one is on your side - you have to strive to preserve your health, because your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Do not forget to unite your sufferings to the Cross for the salvation of souls. You are a brave woman and Christ must love you very, very much. Pray for me…for us all.

God bless you, Emily. Welcome home,

Don’t despair because God is infinitely merciful. He is with us always and desires our salvation. Remember the parable of the prodigal son, and how Jesus told Peter to forgive countless of times, and how he died for us to save us! Just ask him to help you in any difficulty and he surely will. Just persevere. All of us are sinners after all who only rely on God’s grace and mercy.

First of all, welcome home! Second of all, don’t worry about what to say in Holy Confession - just start with the sign of the cross, and say, “Forgive me, Father - it’s been many years since my last Confession. Please help me make a good one.”

Don’t worry, he’ll help you. By the way, if you have a Bible, open it up to the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 15 (yes, the whole chapter). God will forgive you - and when you go to Confession, all of Heaven will celebrate!

Very true…

Here are prayers for you:

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen. :signofcross:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen. :signofcross:
