I’ve been reading some conflicting information about sententia communis teachings and their level of assent.

Ludwig Von Ott says:
Sententia communis : Common Teaching (sententia communis) is doctrine, which in itself belongs to the field of the free opinions, but which is accepted by theologians generally.

Another source says:
The error that is opposed to this level of catholic truth is called false in theology, or temerary, or injurious to catholic schools

How “free” are these opinions, exactly? The second source doesn’t seem to imply at all that one is ‘free’ to opine about them.
