Can praying for the soul of a departed loved one help?

Out of my love for him, I pray a rosary everyday for the soul of my father who died Feb. 22, 2009, but I am wondering if his fate is already sealed. I ask Our Lady to pray for my father’s soul and for specific spiritual and physical needs of living family members and friends. Please advise.
