I was wondering if after seminary you choose what diocese you would go to. I’m in high school but am considering the priesthood, I have no idea how to the whole process works so I’d like some clarification. If I were to become a diocesan priest I’d like to serve in the Diocese of Calgary as that is where my family is moving to, but I live in a different province. Would I be able to choose where to go after seminary?

You would be sent to seminary by a sponsoring Diocese. You cannot study at a seminary without having been admitted to formation by a Diocese. So you can choose which Diocese for which you will enter formation, but they pay for your education and ordain you when you’re finished, and there you will serve.

I joined the formation program of a Diocese other than the one where I grew up and had been resident most of my life. I had gone to college there and my vocation more or less came together for me while I was there. It’s not an uncommon arrangement.
